The hotel that was once one of the most iconic and elegant in Mexico City
Since its inauguration in 1936 and for many decades thereafter, its luxurious rooms have hosted many famous figures passing through the capital. Among many other stories, this building is also the subject of dispute between two of the most important architects of 20th-century Mexico: Carlos Obregón Santacilia and Mario Pani.
New hotels appeared with features more in keeping with subsequent decades, making this modern building, its celebrated interiors, and its fantastic roof garden, fell into decline until it was finally abandoned after the 1985 earthquake. After extensive conservation efforts, the building is now in use again, converted into a space for concerts and other events related to culture and the arts.
