The hotel that was once one of the most iconic and elegant in Mexico City

Since its opening in 1936 and for many decades thereafter, its luxurious rooms have hosted prominent figures passing through the capital. Among many other stories, this building is also the subject of a dispute between two of 20th-century Mexico’s most important architects: Carlos Obregón Santacilia and Mario Pani.

New hotels began to appear, featuring designs more in keeping with the decades that followed, making this modern building, its celebrated interiors, and its fantastic roof gardenfall into decline, seemingly beyond repair after the 1985 earthquake. Following extensive conservation efforts, the building is once again in use, having been converted into a venue for concerts and other events related to culture and the arts.
