Drawing to feel, feeling to draw with Pancita Amarilla

by

As an illustrator and artist, drawing has always been part of me (or me part of it?). For as long as I can remember it has been my main resource to feel the world and interact with it. But little by little I have discovered that the act of drawing goes beyond that. It's something like a friend, a place where you get hurt, have fun, cry, laugh, argue.

For me, the act of drawing is not simply a technical skill, but a profound form of self-knowledge, it is a dialogue with oneself. Each stroke on paper is an act of courage, a manifestation of how the world, in all its chaos and beauty, touches us.

However, I feel it is necessary to emphasize that drawing is much more than a skill reserved for professionals in design or the arts. It is a tool accessible to anyone who wants to feel. Often we do not draw because of the fear of error or excessive self-demand: something that we need to get out of our heads is the idea that the goal of drawing is "to make a good drawing", because what is a good drawing? and a bad one, failing that? For me, there are no bad or "ugly" drawings, there are externalizations, traces that serve as a witness of our human particularity. Drawing is much more than representing reality, it is to feel, to know, to explore, to touch, to let go, to feel. If drawing is feeling and feeling is part of being human, then drawing is human.

From my experience as an illustrator, I firmly believe that drawing should be seen as a process of personal discovery, an action that allows us to be in the moment, to disconnect from the amount of stimuli and information we are exposed to, and not as a competition of skills.

Te comparto algunos tips y ejercicios que me han ayudado en mi camino de redescubrir el dibujo como herramienta para estar y sentir <3

7 tips/exercises to draw feeling and to feel while drawing

  • Always carry a notebook with you: let it be your best friend, someone who accompanies you everywhere, a space without rules, to which only you have access, a record of everything you feel and live.
  • Take 15 minutes (make the time, if you have it) to draw your magical and tragic moment of the day, you can write it down first on the notebook/sheet you do it on. Remember that it doesn't matter what your drawing looks like, nor the level of detail, it matters that you take the time to do it.
  • Draw music: in a place without distractions, where you are alone and where there are no external noises, take out a paper and pen or whatever you have to draw (don't be afraid to experiment with other materials). choose a piece of music (without lyrics, only instruments) and play it (if you can with headphones, better) draw with your eyes closed how you think what you are listening to would look like. don't think about it, just concentrate on listening. think that your pencil, or whatever you are drawing with, is dancing with the music.
  • Self-portrait: think of an activity that brings you peace or makes you happy: maybe it is taking a bath at night after a long day at work, reading in a special place, having a glass of wine listening to an album you like, cooking for someone you love, etc. Draw that moment taking into account all the elements that build it.
  • Don't compare yourself, remember that your process is valuable and your pace is valid.
  • Don't be afraid to make mistakes. In drawing there are no mistakes and if there are, drawing is a safe space for those accidents to manifest themselves.
  • Don't overthink it! Drawing is a tool to have fun and disconnect, focus on feeling.
